Twitter Outage Logs Out Desktop Users

A number of Twitter users have reported that on May 2, they were automatically logged off the desktop site of the platform without any warning. They also said that they couldn’t log back in. Twitter has not yet released an official statement regarding the outage. It is unclear what caused this problem. Users of Twitter also pointed out the coincidence between the outage of the platform and the ease with which alternative social media platforms such as Mastodon or Bluesky are now being signed up.

Twitter has experienced its first major outage since February or March, when several problems drew widespread criticism. Recently, the platform removed blue checkmarks on several “legacy verified accounts”, prompting users to try to recover their verified status. Twitter’s login problem has been linked to the verification issue by some, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk tweeted that day that Tesla now has 20,000,000 followers on the platform. He did not comment on how many followers were bots, or if any had subscribed to Twitter Blue.
