Meet Christa McDonald: The RN Transforming Grief Care Through Digital Innovation

Grief Reimagined: One Woman’s Journey From Bedside to Breakthrough

By Forbes Contributor

In a culture that avoids conversations about death, Christa McDonald is making it her life’s mission to confront it head-on—and help others heal from it.

As a seasoned hospice nurse and founder of GLADD (Grieving Loss After Death and Dying), McDonald is leading a national shift in how America approaches bereavement. Her pioneering 7-day-a-week virtual grief support network provides consistent, accessible care for people suffering profound loss.

Also under her umbrella is Soul Worker, an online bereavement coaching program that provides personalized guidance to those navigating the emotional chaos that can follow death.

From Childhood “Candy Striper” to National Changemaker

McDonald’s career in caregiving began before she could drive. At just 13 years old, she volunteered at the same hospital where she was born, alongside her mother, a retired nurse. As a teenager, she faced death intimately—through hospice care, through her work as an EMT, and through helping her own family members pass in peace.

“I was always told I was ‘special,’” McDonald says. “I used to hear things—messages. I was scared of it as a child. But now I understand—I was meant to help people cross over.”

This sense of calling evolved into a full-blown career in end-of-life care. From ERs to private hospice homes, McDonald became a trusted guide for patients and families alike.

But the turning point came in 2024 when her stepfather, to whom she was deeply connected, passed away unexpectedly.

“I was alone with him when he died. It broke me,” she says. “Even with all my experience, I realized I wasn’t prepared for the grief that came afterward.

GLADD: A Movement Born in Mourning

That painful void inspired her to launch GLADD—an online nonprofit that provides live, interactive grief support every single day.

“Most people think grief is about letting go,” McDonald says. “But it’s really about learning to hold on differently.”

She’s quick to admit that the tech side of entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy. “I’m not a website builder or social media expert,” she says. “But I’m figuring it out, step by step.”

With new collaborators like Paul joining the mission, Christa feels momentum building.

Grounding, Growth, and What’s Next

McDonald credits her mental and emotional resilience to a strict wellness regimen that includes boxing, yoga, meditation, and clean eating. “I don’t drink. I move my body. I make fun plans every month. This work requires that I stay grounded.”

Looking ahead, McDonald dreams of expanding her services to reach thousands more, eventually launching a grief-oriented Dream Foundation to fund personal healing journeys for those in need.

Final Thoughts

McDonald’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is refreshingly real:

“Don’t quit. Don’t stop learning. And never underestimate the power of the right team.”

Though still in its early stages, her online platform is growing.

Christa McDonald is more than a nurse, more than a founder—she’s a grief revolutionary.
