Lisa Rothstein Shows Why Hand-Drawn Thinking Still Matters in Business

As businesses race to adopt artificial intelligence tools capable of generating polished presentations, detailed reports, and professional visuals within seconds, one communications expert is making a case for a much older skill set.

Lisa Rothstein, New Yorker cartoonist, former Madison Avenue creative director, founder of Drawing Out Your Genius, and creator of the Sketch to Sell methodology, believes the future of leadership communication may depend less on perfection and more on authenticity. Her book, Drawing Out Your Genius, recently earned a Bronze Axiom Business Book Award in the Independent Thought Leadership category, bringing renewed attention to the power of hand-drawn thinking in an increasingly automated world.

The award recognizes a growing business philosophy that values clarity, trust, and human connection over visual perfection.

Turning Complex Ideas Into Visual Conversations

At the center of Lisa’s work is a deceptively simple concept: leaders communicate more effectively when they draw.

Rather than relying exclusively on lengthy presentations or highly designed slides, Drawing Out Your Genius teaches business professionals how to use quick hand-drawn visuals to simplify ideas, inspire collaboration, and create stronger alignment within teams.

Lisa argues that imperfect visuals often perform better than polished materials because they invite participation and make ideas feel more approachable.

“Humans have been communicating through hand-drawn images since cave walls. It is our oldest and most trusted language,” Lisa says. “In a world flooded with AI-generated perfection, that primal, imperfect human mark is more powerful than ever.”

The message resonates at a time when organizations are searching for ways to cut through digital fatigue and foster more meaningful communication.

That philosophy has also earned Lisa a recurring column in Psychology Today titled Proof of Humanity, where she explores why imperfection, vulnerability, and authentic human expression are becoming increasingly important trust signals in a technology-driven world.

A Career Bridging Creativity and Strategy

Lisa’s expertise comes from years spent at the intersection of business storytelling and creative leadership. Before founding Drawing Out Your Genius, she built a career as a Madison Avenue creative director while also contributing cartoons to The New Yorker.

Her professional experience exposed her to a recurring challenge faced by leaders and organizations: complex ideas often fail because they are communicated in ways people struggle to understand or emotionally connect with.

Through her consultancy, Lisa now helps leaders, teams, and consultants use visual storytelling techniques to improve buy-in, communicate ideas more clearly, and navigate organizational change.

She also serves as the San Diego Chapter Chair of the National Cartoonists’ Society, the organization founded in 1946 whose distinguished members have included Charles Schulz, Cathy Guisewite, and Garry Trudeau.

Importantly, her methodology is designed for non-artists. Lisa emphasizes that effective visual communication is less about artistic talent and more about creating clarity through simple, relatable imagery.

Building on this approach, she is also the originator of Sketch to Sell, a program that teaches coaches, consultants, and service professionals how to use simple drawings—and the human connection they create—to close bigger, faster sales.

Why Authenticity Is Becoming a Business Advantage

The recognition from the Axiom Business Book Awards arrives during a period of rapid technological transformation. As AI-generated content becomes increasingly common, businesses are reevaluating how trust and authenticity influence communication.

Lisa’s work suggests that the most effective leadership tools may not always come from technology itself, but from uniquely human behaviors that technology cannot replicate.

Alongside winning the Bronze Axiom Business Book Award, Drawing Out Your Genius has received five-star reviews and will be featured at the American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago in June 2026.

As organizations navigate an AI-powered future, Lisa’s message remains consistent: the ability to create genuine human connection may be one of the most valuable competitive advantages of all.
