For nearly 25 years, Deidre Pujols’ public identity was tied to her marriage with baseball legend Albert Pujols. She was known as the supportive wife, the speaker at churches, the philanthropist attached to a famous name. But when her marriage ended, she asked herself a question: Who am I outside of that spotlight?
Her answer is now taking shape in kitchens, classrooms, and communities around the world.
A Shift in Identity
“People always invited me because I was Albert’s wife,” she reflects. “Now, I’m showing up as me. I’ve always been a philanthropist, and that’s where my heart is.”
Through her nonprofit Open Gate International, Pujols is transforming her passion into practical opportunities for others—building training programs in culinary arts and beyond. These initiatives serve incarcerated youth in California, survivors of trafficking in Cambodia, and refugees in Europe.
The Challenges of Philanthropy
The path hasn’t been easy. Beyond the constant struggle for funding, Pujols acknowledges the emotional weight of engaging communities in difficult issues like trafficking and poverty. “People applaud your work, call it noble, but don’t always engage,” she says.
Still, she remains undeterred. Her resilience, she explains, comes from lived experience—raising a daughter with Down syndrome, balancing five children, and navigating a high-profile divorce.
Finding Balance
For Pujols, balance isn’t a buzzword; it’s survival. “If my family life felt chaotic, that was my cue to pause,” she says. “Work is important, but when the scales tip too far, something suffers.”
This ability to reset has allowed her to maintain her philanthropic drive while avoiding burnout—a lesson she now shares with aspiring entrepreneurs.
A Legacy Beyond Baseball
Her most emotional project yet is building a kitchen in Calcutta, India, near the home of her philanthropic hero, Mother Teresa. “She’s always been a philanthropic hero to me,” Pujols says. “To create something in her honor feels like a mountaintop moment.”
By reclaiming her identity and expanding her reach, Pujols is proving that philanthropy is not about fame—it’s about impact.
“My goal is simple,” she says. “Help people discover their passions and turn them into a force for good. That’s my true calling.”
