From Battle Drills to the Boardroom: Clemon E. Byrd’s Mission to Serve Never Stopped

In a world where career pivots often come from necessity rather than desire, Clemon E. Byrd stands as a striking example of resilience, reinvention, and an unwavering commitment to service. Founder of Byrdeye Investigations, a private investigation firm specializing in background checks for businesses and churches, Byrd’s entrepreneurial path is less about personal gain and more about continued purpose.

“I’ve always been serving,” Byrd says, reflecting on the journey that led him from the streets of Auburn, Alabama as a police officer to deployment zones in Kuwait and Afghanistan with the Alabama Army National Guard. “Opening my own background check service was a natural extension of that mission—to keep my community safe.”

From Public Service to Private Sector

Byrd spent over 15 years with the Auburn Police Department before transitioning into military service. But when an active-duty assignment didn’t work out as planned, he found himself working for AT&T and later running a successful campaign for Auburn City Council. It was during his deployment in Kuwait that the seeds of entrepreneurship took root.

“While deployed, I started thinking: how can I use everything I’ve learned to create something that lasts—something that helps people?” Byrd recalls.

The answer was Byrdeye Investigations, a firm that leans on his deep background in law enforcement and public safety.

Battling Setbacks—and Building Strength

Every successful entrepreneur has a string of failures behind them—and Byrd is no exception. From an entertainment promotion venture to a failed security franchise, Byrd’s early ventures didn’t pan out. In the military, a significant personal setback came when he was relieved of duty as a company commander in Afghanistan—an experience he describes as “a part of my life I am not proud of.”

But instead of allowing it to define him, Byrd used the experience as a turning point.

“I blamed everyone else at first. But then I realized—the problem is me. No one can fix me but me,” he says candidly.

With the support of military mentors and a drive to keep improving, Byrd was later promoted—twice.

His mindset? A powerful blend of grit and humility.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy,” he says, quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those just starting out or struggling to find traction, Byrd offers a dose of hard-earned wisdom:

“There will always be adversity. But keep moving forward. Like Rocky said, ‘It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.’”

It’s not just about weathering storms—it’s about learning from them.

Work-Life Balance in Real Terms

Juggling military duty, entrepreneurship, and family life isn’t easy—but Byrd has learned to prioritize what matters most.

“Sometimes I just stop what I’m doing and call my family, even if it’s just for a few moments,” he says.

Currently stationed in San Antonio, Texas, he makes it a point to take leave and reconnect.

“We often forget that while we love providing for our families, they also need us.”

What’s Next: Motivation Through Storytelling

Looking forward, Byrd is eager to expand his impact through motivational speaking.

“There are people out there on the verge of giving up. I want to let them know—giving up is not an option. There is always hope,” he says.

It’s a fitting next chapter for someone who’s spent his life helping others—from his local community to soldiers overseas. And now, through Byrdeye Investigations and his future work as a speaker, Byrd is continuing his mission: to serve, protect, and inspire.
