- It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story? How did you get to where you are today?
I am an author, speaker, and marketing professional. I am also a daughter, sister, and Alzheimer’s Advocate. When my mom and brother were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, my role transitioned to caregiver. After losing my mom, brother, and two uncles to the disease, God kept me and molded me so that he could use me to fulfill my God-ordained purpose.
Before Alzheimer’s I enjoyed hour-long conversations, great food, laughter and the unforgettable wisdom that my mom and brother shared when I visited home.
Eight years later, my heart is healing, and I am helping those who are walking the Alzheimer’s journey turn their devastation into restoration so they can experience the benefits of the pain that accompanies this journey. I know this is possible because God did it for me. He transformed what appeared to be the worst events in my life into a purpose and restored my peace.
- I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
When we become caregivers, no matter the illness, it changes our lives and perspective. Our focus shifts to providing care for our loved ones, but time is at the center. With every second that passes, we cherish each moment and store them in our hearts for early withdrawals when life overwhelms us.
Losing them right before your eyes and knowing that they knew who you were deep within their hearts, yet they didn’t know themselves, was the most challenging part of the journey. But conquering fear and starting over were also enormous challenges. As you grasp that the one who gave you life will no longer share ‘earthly’ life with you, it pierces your heart in a way that only God can heal.
- Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
As an Alzheimer’s Advocate with the North and Central Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, my work includes promoting Alzheimer’s education and awareness in the community. I share information about the disease and my personal story, direct participants to resources, and listen to their stories at community health fairs and other events.
I am building a robust support network to help families so that no one faces the challenges of Alzheimer’s alone.
- What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?
List your goals on paper (hand-written or typed) using the SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goal approach. Begin with a brief list of three to five goals, and you will realize that using the SMART goal approach will quickly expand your to-do list. Be consistent with your plan and reward yourself for completing tasks to help you achieve your goals.
- Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
Being wiser than you were yesterday and accomplishing something that you have not done before – no matter how small – that’s success!
- What’s next for you?
My next major accomplishment is to establish a non-profit in honor of my mom and brother to help eradicate the fear associated with the disease, continue to promote awareness and provide resources to those who are impacted by Alzheimer’s so that no one faces the journey alone.
