Deborah Stellingwerff Challenges the Burnout Model of Real Estate Success

There is a version of success in real estate that is easy to recognize from the outside. More transactions. Higher production. Awards. A calendar that stays full because business is good.

Deborah Stellingwerff achieved those traditional markers as an award-winning REALTOR®. Yet somewhere along the way, she began asking a more personal question: Was she building the success she actually wanted, or simply pursuing the version she had learned to value?

That distinction eventually changed the direction of her work.

Today, as founder of Aligned and Prosperous Coaching Inc., Stellingwerff helps real estate and service-based sales professionals build profitable businesses without allowing those businesses to take over their lives.

When Achievement Is Not the Same as Alignment

Stellingwerff’s experience in real estate taught her that professional achievement and personal fulfillment do not automatically arrive together.

It is possible to reach the goals an industry celebrates and still discover that the business behind those accomplishments does not support the life you want to live.

For Stellingwerff, that realization led to a different way of thinking about prosperity.

“You don’t have to sacrifice your health and well-being to be successful,” she says. “You do need to become the leader your business needs.”

Her philosophy starts with a simple premise: entrepreneurs need to define success for themselves.

One person may genuinely want to build a seven-figure company and lead a growing team. Someone else may want greater profitability without increasing volume. Another may value fewer working hours, stronger boundaries or more time with family.

None of those goals is inherently more legitimate than another.

Run the Business Before It Runs You

The problem, Stellingwerff believes, begins when entrepreneurs never stop to decide what they are actually building toward.

Real estate can make that particularly difficult. Client needs are immediate, sales goals are measurable, and there is nearly always another opportunity to pursue. Without clear boundaries and business systems, success can quietly become synonymous with constant availability. The myth that REALTORS® need to be available 24/7 still persists in many corners of the industry.

Stellingwerff summarizes her alternative simply: “Run your business like a business, so your business doesn’t run your life.”

That requires looking beyond revenue. Capacity matters. So do financial leadership, systems, relationships, personal well-being and the amount of life a business leaves available outside of work.

Her book, Align & Prosper: A Modern Real Estate Agent’s Guide to Thriving Without Burnout, develops this philosophy for agents who want meaningful growth without treating exhaustion as evidence of ambition.

Defining Prosperity for Yourself

Stellingwerff’s perspective is also shaped by a background that reaches beyond sales and business coaching. She holds a master’s degree in English with a focus on rhetoric and brings more than 20-years of experience as an educator in communication and human behaviour.

That foundation informs how she thinks about leadership. Business decisions are rarely about numbers alone. They involve communication, relationships, personal patterns and the way leaders understand themselves and influence others.

She now brings that thinking to her business and leadership coaching through live events such as her annual Master Plan business planning event, as well as programs including the Sales Leadership Accelerator and Leadership Mastermind.

At the center is Stellingwerff’s belief that leadership creates alignment, and alignment creates prosperity. The work begins by deciding what prosperity actually means to the individual.

That answer may include more money. It may also include time, freedom, health, family or peace of mind.

A successful business should be able to support those priorities rather than continually compete with them.

For Stellingwerff, that is the more useful measure of success: building a business that performs well without losing sight of the life it was meant to support.
