For first responders, pressure is not occasional. It is constant. Firefighters make high stakes decisions in rapidly changing environments where mental clarity can directly affect outcomes. Yet despite the demands of the profession, conversations around mental readiness and emotional resilience have often remained secondary to tactical training. Charles J. “CJ” Dickinson II, Battalion Chief and founder of Flashpoint Consulting LLC, is helping change that through leadership development and coaching designed specifically for the fire service. At the recent Metro Atlanta Firefighters Conference, CJ delivered a presentation titled Size Up Within, offering firefighters a practical framework for strengthening resilience through self awareness and intentional leadership.
Held on May 13, 2026, at the Cobb County Fire Training Center in Marietta, Georgia, the presentation focused on helping firefighters bridge the gap between operational readiness and internal resilience.
Rethinking Readiness in High Stress Professions
In emergency services, preparation often emphasizes technical competence, physical conditioning, and tactical precision. But CJ believes true readiness requires something more.
Drawing from fireground principles already familiar to firefighters, Size Up Within encouraged attendees to conduct internal assessments similar to the rapid “size ups” performed during emergency incidents. Instead of evaluating external risks alone, participants were challenged to assess their stress levels, emotional capacity, decision making patterns, and leadership habits.
The goal was practical rather than theoretical.
By translating mental wellness into the operational language firefighters already understand, the presentation offered tools attendees could immediately apply both on and off duty.
The conversation arrives at a time when many departments are increasingly recognizing the importance of resilience, emotional endurance, and mental health support for first responders navigating chronic stress and repeated trauma exposure.

Jennifer Anderson, founder and CEO of First Responder Coaching, also contributed to the broader coaching and development efforts surrounding the work.
Building a Stronger Fire Service Culture
For CJ, growth begins where comfort ends.
“Get comfortable being uncomfortable, that is where growth occurs,” he says, reflecting a philosophy that encourages firefighters to embrace challenge as part of personal and professional development.
As leadership expectations continue evolving within emergency services, CJ’s work reflects a growing belief that resilience can no longer be treated as optional. It must be developed intentionally.
For firefighters navigating increasingly complex demands, mental readiness may become one of the profession’s most valuable tools.
